about

I put this together in collaboration with The Organic Helicopter, a group founded at Southwestern University that is dedicated to mix art and science. The performance, Dance Based Roughly Around Integrated Neural Netwaorks (DBRAINN), was part of Hyde Park Theater's --FronteraFest: Short Fringe-- in Austin, Texas, February 6, 2014.

CONTEXT:
The music serves as the environment and context of DBRAINN, metaphorically standing in for everything which is perceived outside the self. For this reason we chose the emotions ______. ________, ________, and _______ to exhibit how the brain learns to approach a new situation and this may change depending on the environment. An example might be interpreting someone raising their hand to you in a friendly environment (ie. pleasant music) as a high-five, while in a more chaotic environment (ie. tense music) you may interpret it as someone about to hit you.
Thus dependent on the context, a situation will evoke different reactions to accomplish a given task, and each different part of the brain (eg. amygdala, prefrontal cortex, etc.) tells commands for the muscle cells, which are turned-up or turned-down by the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) so that a coherent message is communicated to the muscles. Improvised choreographers, each with a different 'personality' corresponding to a part of the brain, issue commands to (dancers) which were mixed by the ACC and sent to the two dancers (one signifying the 'expected' movement, the other the 'real' movement) to adjust their dance.

If both expected and real are the same, then the basal ganglia (ie. hand bell player) signals to the ACC and other brain "choreographers" they are being successful and the improvised choreography is recorded for later use (as the environment/music presents itself). If improvised choreography is not resulting in the 'expected' and 'real' dancers matching up, the basal ganglia signals to the ACC and the brain "choreographers" to change their approach. When a similar musical phrase is recalled, the loop that was created by that phrase is recalled and the successful dance from that loop is repeated. This album only accounts for the environment and recorded loops. I believe the performance was recorded live on camera but I don't know if it's available.
